Little Orphans
I get off work at lunch on Fridays now so I was home early afternoon when the thunderstorm started. Marli was standing at the door looking at the wind blowing and watching the rain. She said she heard a bird screeching. I walked out on the porch and listened and realized it was kittens crying. We had to wait til the lightening let up a little before we could check it out, but when my husband got home we walked around the side of the house and found two kittens helplessly crying, drenched, and near hypothermic and lying in a shallow puddle. I got a box lined with a towel and picked them up. I picked up another kitten...wait, no...TWO MORE clinging to each other so hard that I picked them up as one little wet lump. I had to pry them apart to dry them. They couldn't be more than a week old. Eyes barely open and ears just beginning to open good.
My husband got a syringe (needle-less of course) and some kind of little thing out of his jump bag that I think was part of an IV kit and we screwed it into the top of the syringe. It had tiny tip on it just small enough to get into their mouths comfortably (it was perfect actually, couldn't have done better on such short notice). I warmed some milk on the stove and pulled a couple ounces into the syringe. Marli and I managed finally to get a few drops down them. I had to hold the nape of their necks and lay them ontheir backs and pop it in there as they started to meow. That was the only time I could get it in their little mouths. They didn't know what was going on, poor things...little legs flailing and heads turning fromside to side. They were warm, dry and full and slept all night in a little huddle. Their fleas got warm, dry and full too and are climbing over each other. Gotta do something about that today.
I took some photos so I'll put them up as soon as I download them. They are all girls. Marli has named them after the girls in the Twilight series....Alice, Bells, i can't remember the rest. They are gray for the most part, but two of them have some white striping. There is one runt that is still very weak. I'm worried about that one. He ate a good breakfast this morning (4 drops...2 more than last night)so he should be pepping up hopefully.
Of course, we can't keep them. We have a dog and he is so upset he starts shaking because we have turned our attention to a box of little peeping squeaking kittens. I let him get close enough to sniff just to see how they'd get along. He sniffed, but the kitten spat and hissed when it sensed the danger. Not gonna work.
My neighbor has several cats so I know the mother is nearby. She abandoned them for some reason, though. Two of them don't seem as stable as the other two. Mother cats know when things aren't right. OR she could have been run over as we do live on a busy street and near a highway. I walked several miles here by the house yesterday before this happened adn never saw a cat in the road so I know it wasn't around here.
My husband ran a busy shift on the ambulance yesterday and thought his rescue efforts were over for the day. Not yet! Four little orphans awaited their hero.
